A lot of business owners ask this. If work's coming in through word of mouth and the phone's ringing, it's a fair question.

But for most local businesses, not having a website is quietly costing them jobs.

Even if someone gets your number from a mate, there's a good chance they'll Google you before picking up the phone. They want to see what you do, what you roughly charge, and whether you look like a proper operation. If they can't find you, some of them move on.

This isn't a generational thing. A plumber in Chichester told us he lost a job to a competitor purely because his rival had a website with reviews and he didn't. The customer told him afterwards.

Facebook and Instagram are useful for reaching people who already follow you. A website catches people who are actively searching for what you offer right now. Those tend to be better leads, because they've already decided they need the service. You also don't own your Facebook page. Meta can change the algorithm, cut your reach, or suspend your account. A website is yours.

A lot of businesses put it off because they assume it means a big project, a developer on call, and a bill that doesn't add up. It doesn't have to be that complicated. A five-page site with your services, some photos, and your contact details is enough. It doesn't need to be clever. It just needs to exist, load fast, and look like you run a proper business.

When someone types "electrician Portsmouth" or "hair salon Chichester" into Google, they get websites back. Not Facebook pages. Not Instagram profiles. Websites. If you're not there, someone else is getting that call.

If you want customers to find you when they're ready to spend, you need a website. If referrals are enough and you're not looking to grow, maybe it can wait. But most business owners who ask this question already know the answer. A website is usually where more customers start.

We build five-page sites for local businesses across the South of England from £45 a month. No setup fee, no contract.
